Popular Hairstyles for Natural Hair

Natural hair is very versatile. There are many ways of shaping and styling it to suit your preferences. The natural hair community has grown in leaps and bounds. This growth has come along with new hairstyles and a different standard for society’s expectation of natural hair. There are new blogs and YouTube channels dealing with or catering to natural hair coming up at every month. Some of the hairstyles that are popular on these platforms include:

Twists and Twist Outs

Once you have washed, conditioned and oiled your hair, the next step is to twist it. This style is simple.Part your hair into sections of your preferred size. Applying a dime-size amount of gel on each section, work this gel into the section and separate it into two. Twist the two strands together and swirl your finger at the end so that the twist does not unravel. Repeat this process on all other sections of your hair. Once this is done, you can choose to air dry the twists, wrap a satin scarf and let them dry overnight or wear a plastic cap and use a hooded dryer to hasten the process.

Twists can be worn as is or bobby pinned into different hairstyles depending on the occasion. If you do not want to wear your hair in twists, you can also apply some carrier oil onto your hands and unravel the twists once they are dry. Separate each twist where the hair naturally parts to get volume.

Flat twists

Flat twists are very similar to twists. The difference is that you twist your hair along a line. Instead of having only two strands twisted together, you twist different strands together but along a line in your preferred direction.

Like the twists, work on washed, conditioned and oiled hair. Part a straight line with a rat-tail comb to make the part clean. Apply curling or holding gel or butter onto the section of hair. Work it into every part of the hair and then starting at the bottom, twists two strands of hair onto each other, adding strands as you go along the line. Once you reach the end and there are no more sections to add, twist the hair into a normal twist and twirl the end to lock it so it does not unravel. Let your hair air dry, use a drier or let it dry overnight while wrapped in a satin scarf.

Like the twists, you can wear them as is or undo them to reveal curly and coiled hair. To do this, apply some carrier oil on your hands and gently unravel the flat twists. Separate where necessary and tease the hair at the roots with a wide-toothed comb to add volume.

Pin and Tuck

As the name suggests, this method requires pinning the hair in place and tucking some. You can be as creative as you want with this hairstyle as it is not standard. You can create any shape you like depending on the occasion. All you need is a box full of bobby pins and an idea of how you would like you would like your hair to look.
